Why I Embrace an Old-Fashioned Homemaking Lifestyle

Sharing is caring!

In today’s fast-paced world, there’s something deeply comforting about slowing down and returning to the simple rhythms of traditional homemaking. That’s why I embrace an old-fashioned homemaking lifestyle—it keeps me grounded, brings peace to my day, and fills our home with warmth and purpose.

Old-fashioned homemaking isn’t about being perfect or going back in time. It’s about choosing slow, intentional living. It’s baking from scratch, line-drying linens in the sun, tending to a cozy space with heart and creating a haven where our families can rest and flourish.

A Peek into My Slow Morning Routine

My day usually begins by opening the curtains to let the morning light pour in and greeting our sweet fur babies. I get the coffee percolating, then start a quick breakfast while feeding the cats and letting our dog out. As the cats eat, I take a moment to feed my sourdough starter and begin the first load of laundry.

I’ll also put away any clean dishes and wash the cats’ bowls. Once the coffee is ready, I settle in with my warm cup, read the Lord’s Word, and journal my thoughts. I truly cherish these slow, intentional mornings before the busyness of the day begins.

What Old-Fashioned Homemaking Means to Me

For me, it’s not just housework, it’s homework. And it matters. It’s not about perfection; and it’s about presence. It means:

  • Starting the morning with a tidy kitchen and a warm cup of coffee
  • Washing dishes by hand while listening to music
  • Using what we have, repurposing vintage finds, and finding joy in the small things
  • Following a gentle routine that brings structure and peace

Why I Love This Way of Living

Here are a few reasons I continue to choose this path:

  1. It Slows Me Down: Old-fashioned homemaking invites me to be present. Whether I’m kneading dough or folding fresh laundry, I’m not rushing; I’m enjoying the process.
  2. It Feels Purposeful: There’s purpose in the daily chores. Cleaning, cooking, and caring for our home are not small tasks—they’re sacred rhythms that create comfort and beauty.
  3. It Connects Me to the Past: I often think of my grandmother or generations before me who lived this way, not out of trend, but out of necessity. There’s wisdom in those routines.
  4. It Teaches Contentment: Using what we have, making do, and finding beauty in the ordinary teaches me to be content and grateful every day.

Frequently Asked Questions

What makes homemaking “old-fashioned”?

Old-fashioned homemaking focuses on time-honored practices like cooking from scratch, maintaining a daily cleaning routine, using natural products, and creating a cozy home with simple, meaningful touches. It’s rooted in slower living and intentionally caring for the home and family, often inspired by how generations before us lived.

How do I get started with traditional homemaking if I’m overwhelmed?

Start small. Focus on one area—like making your bed each morning, creating a weekly meal plan, or setting up a cleaning routine. Add comforting touches to your home, like fresh flowers or a soft throw. The key is to begin gently and give yourself grace. Old-fashioned homemaking isn’t about doing more—it’s about doing what matters well.

Do I have to live in an old house or use antiques to be an old-fashioned homemaker?

Not at all! Old-fashioned homemaking is more about mindset and daily habits than decor. Whether you live in a modern apartment or a country cottage, you can embrace this lifestyle by choosing simple routines, cooking with love, and creating a peaceful, welcoming space with whatever you have.

Final Thoughts

Homemaking isn’t just about clean floors or full pantries. It’s about how we show up in our homes. For me, choosing an old-fashioned homemaking lifestyle is a way of loving my family, stewarding our home, and living more peacefully. And I wouldn’t have it any other way.
