Finding Contentment With Your Home, even when we are struggling with the stages, we are in with our home. What’s important is that we need to focus on the little things that make us happy.

We see these larger homes that we admire or the beautiful rooms we see in magazines decorated ever so lovely. Yet, you are thinking about your dream home, or the small house you live in isn’t what you want to create your house into a dream home; even though you put a lot of work into it, you are still not Finding Contentment With Your Home!

I remember when my husband & I were renting our first apartment together, I constantly rearranged the furniture and tried to find cheap decor to make it feel homey. To be happy with what you have was something I had to learn to appreciate & be thankful for.

Then we moved into a little house that we rented, and I mean, it was so tiny, but we made it work. We had mismatched furniture that was given to us because we didn’t have a lot of money to buy new furniture at that time. Even though my husband had a good job, we still had to save pennies to buy our first house, and we saved for a long time to purchase a bigger home.

We all want our dream house and want to make our home feel cozy & beautiful.

Maybe you already have your dream home or are working towards it, but whatever it may be, you too can be happy with what you have in your current home! At the end of the day, we are human beings, and we all desire true contentment for the perfect house.

Finding Contentment With Your Home, How?

More importantly, you need to start with gratitude! Start a gratitude journal and list what you are grateful for and the desires of your heart, whether it be just a few simple things like the handmade throw pillows on the new sofa in the living room that you saved for a couple of years or the coffee table where you sit your cup of coffee in the early mornings before the small children to wake up running around and knocking it over., or how about the wingback chair that took forever to refinish that sits by the dining table. Sometimes all it takes is adding a fresh coat of paint to the kitchen cabinets or cleaning the dirty dishes that have been left in the sink since the night before.

Social media concerns are a matter of the heart.

First thing, do not get stuck with comparing your home. We follow social media accounts that are full of inspiration, and they have a perfect life. But in reality, they really just want to share their home decor to give you inspiration for your next idea or DIY project. Do you really think these influencers keep their homes looking like a magazine? Of course not! We all go through seasons of life, and we believe we need a bigger house, or what we have is simply not enough. Comparing yourself leads to this chaotic feeling and frustration because we compare ourselves with others.

Comparison is the thief of joy.

~Theodore Roosevelt

Your happy place for finding contentment in your home!

  1. Find a piece of furniture that needs new life by refreshing it with paint.
  2. Take a hot bath. Sometimes that is all you need to clear the negative feelings you have!
  3. Movie nights with the family eases the body & soul.
  4. Create a focal point in the room to liven up the space.
  5. Take a break from social media.

Do what makes your heart content in your home.

As much as I dislike painting, I knew my laundry room needed it badly. We have been doing little things to freshen up the space, like adding shelving and a step-back cabinet. Painting the room was needed, and I knew I would be content once it was done. I spent the entire weekend painting (with some help for my amazing husband). It’s amazing what a fresh coat of paint can do for a space.

Of course, there are many things we want to do, like I want to add a new fence in the yard, but there is no room in the budget knowing we have to get a new roof, so that will have to wait. So instead, we look on Craigslist or Facebook Marketplace to find a patio set to enjoy cookouts with our family & friends. Last year, we put new floors in, now the next big thing is to work on the kitchen. That kitchen layout will take some time; even though we already installed a vintage sink, we need to reconfigure the layout so we can add a dishwasher. We have many unfinished projects, but they will get done in time.

Distract your mind with cleaning!

Whenever I find myself feeling depressed or in a slump, I start cleaning. Believe it or not, it really changes your perspective on things. For example, once a room has been cleaned, it changes my attitude on how I feel about the space. If you knew me, you would know I do not like a messy house, and tidying rooms makes me happy and content.

A fresh start and our first home

My husband & I were just married, and I, a young mother, lived in an 800-square footage studio apartment; my husband and I didn’t have much money. We didn’t have much material-wise, but those small things we had accumulated over time became big things that I was so grateful for and did not take for granted; eventually, after a couple of years, my husband & I worked at a new job that paid off, and we could finally afford a new home. I didn’t care to have a big house but one with which I could raise my family and make beautiful memories. As we settled into our home, over time, we would find a little bit more furniture & decor to fill any blank space in our home. That’s when thrifting really became an obsession, haha 🙂

Shop your home!

Oh, I love to shop my home. Over the years of collecting things from thrifting & antiquing, my attic has become my very own personal store. Every now & then, I will go up to the attic and shop my home. Sometimes I find something I completely forgot I had, making it much more fun. Also, how about switching things up? Look for items that you can switch around. For example, I tend to take everything off the bookcase & change all around to give it a different look. This also allows me to see just what I have stored.

Declutter & Organize

Take this time to declutter the pantry, drawers, and closets. You will find that decluttering and removing unnecessary items that you longer use or want makes you feel so good. I tend to reorganize drawers often, but sometimes I forget about things I have when there is a mess in the closets & drawers. Baskets can be great for organization and will make the space look freshened up. Be sure to hit the thrift stores first before heading to your local department store for baskets.

Focus on the important rooms

The main living space, such as the loving room & the kitchen, is what I wanted to focus on making the way we want it. The living room was freshly painted but had this awful carpet. We got new flooring in the living room & kitchen, which made a huge difference and made the room look much fresher and brighter. Whatever your current circumstances are financial, find something you can do to make the space freshen up or needs some love that will make your heart content.

Create a Dream List

We all have a wish list for our home. Creating a list for each space will help you keep finding contentment in your home.

Finding Contentment With Your Home, what do you love about your home?

Create a list of everything you love about your home. You will be surprised at how blessed you are and find gratitude for what you have.

Finding contentment in your home isn’t that hard. Just remember the be grateful for what God has blessed you with!

Until next time my friends,

It’s not always easy when you want more space and “better” accommodations but focusing on that will make you miserable. Sometimes it’s best to just appreciate the little things about the homes we have.

I needed this post today! I am currently working through the house room by room. It’s daunting because we are having to fill in cracks in the paneling with drywall mud and tape then painting, de-corning the ceiling and so much more, in every single room in the house. We haven’t even gotten to flooring. But what’s great is that once a room is done, I fall in love with my house even more. I also love the idea of shopping my house. After 20 years of rental living, I finally have a place to start buying décor. It’s been a wild ride for the last year we’ve been in our home.

I love this topic. It’s essential, especially if you’re trying to stop shopping so much or become a conscious consumer. But, it’s harder to do than it seems. Your tips are so practical and I appreciate that!
