Following Jesus Christ can help us to give ourselves the grace we need and to live a more fulfilling life.

Negative self-talk can be damaging to our mental health.

It can be easy to fall into a cycle of negative thinking, but it is essential to be aware of these thoughts and to challenge them. Instead of dwelling on negative thoughts, practicing self-compassion and giving yourself grace is necessary. Remind yourself that mistakes are part of life and that you are allowed to be imperfect. Speak kindly to yourself and acknowledge your accomplishments, no matter how small. This will help you to move forward with a positive attitude.

Social media can have a negative effect on social comparison.

We may compare ourselves to others and feel we are lacking in some way. It is essential to be aware of these thoughts and to challenge them. Remind yourself that everyone has their unique gifts and talents and that you are enough. Give yourself grace and practice self-compassion. Speak kindly to yourself and celebrate the things you are proud of. This will help to reduce the negative impact of social comparison.

Remove yourself from toxic environments.

This is essential for your physical, mental, and emotional well-being. When in a toxic environment, it cannot be easy to see a way out, but it is essential to take action to protect yourself. This may involve setting boundaries with toxic individuals, seeking support from friends and family, seeking professional help, or in extreme cases, leaving the situation altogether. Remember that it is okay to prioritize your health and well-being and that removing yourself from a toxic environment signifies strength and self-care. Deciding to remove yourself from a toxic environment can be difficult, but it is necessary to achieve a healthier and happier life.

Don’t set yourself up for unrealistic expectations.

Setting unrealistic expectations for oneself can lead to feelings of disappointment, frustration, and low self-esteem. Unrealistic expectations are often driven by a need for perfection or a desire to meet external standards rather than a focus on personal growth and self-improvement. When these expectations are not met, individuals may feel like they have failed and experience negative consequences, such as decreased motivation and increased stress levels.

Add these tiny habits into your everyday life.

Taking a break, going for a walk, or having coffee with a friend are simple yet effective ways to give yourself grace and promote self-care. These activities provide an opportunity to step away from daily demands and obligations, allowing you to recharge and refocus.

  • A short break can help you clear your mind, reduce stress and increase your overall well-being.

Remember to focus on your progress and treat yourself with kindness and compassion, just as you would with others. By doing so, you can release the burden of perfectionism and embrace the beauty and growth that come from learning and improving.

  1. Thank you for these tips Dusty. I am having a hard time lately, with my elderly father sick in hospital, and me and my siblings working out care for my mother (Dad is her full time caregiver, when he is sick, we all rush in to sort out care!).
Plus my 16 year old cat is near death, and I know that I need to give him a kind and peaceful end to his beautiful little life.
I will step back from these worries, and think about things I have done so far to help everyone. I am taking on certain jobs to put things in place for my parents, so we can deal with the crisis at hand, and have better support for them in future.
    With love

  2. Thank you for this post! I am also in a difficult season in my life at the moment. My time with God is so important right now. He reminds me that He loves me no matter the circumstances. Isaiah 41:10 has been especially meaningly for me the last month or so. “So do not fear, for I am with you; do not be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you and help you; I will uphold you with my righteous right hand.” NIV

  3. What a beautiful reminder. I’m thankful for the grace that Jesus gives and what a wonderful example it gives for us to show grace to ourselves. Thanks for sharing these simple ways to start giving grace to ourselves.

  4. Thank you for this! It can be hard to remember one’s accomplishments when there’s a never ending to-do list and the feeling of not being able to keep up. I’ll come back to this list again when I need to be reminded of this!

  5. This is such a relevant post today, no matter where in the world you live. We have all been through so much since 2020. It’s important to stop, assess your situation, and breathe deeply. For me, there’s something special about praising and worshiping God while I cook or do other household chores; or when I’m playing with my kids; or when I go outside to do farm chores. The animals have no clue what’s going on in the world…they’re just happy to see me. The feeling is mutual. The cares of the day seem to melt away.

    1. I agree! It sure has been a rough couple of years for us all. Just remember, we will get through it. I forgot to add that I also find great comfort in loving up my dog & kitties. There is something about just talking to them & snuggling up with them that brings me so much peace, not to mention my family too! We all have to be there for one another.

  6. What a good word!! People… women especially can be so hard on themselves. As a single mom I know I was…. But I hold my head high, knowing I wasn’t a perfect mom.. I did the best I could and God covered the rest.
