How to use baskets in your home will make it easier to keep your home organized & tidied up! The possibilities are endless!

I have baskets in many sizes used all over my home, but I must admit, though, that I am a bit obsessed with collecting them especially vintage baskets, as I do with mason jars. I have been for many years. However, I find that the baskets that I acquire, I do use for intentional use and home decor.

How to use Baskets in Your Home

When you don’t have enough storage spaces in your home, baskets are the next best thing that helps me keep items tucked away while still adding beauty and functionality to your home.

Dusty Heschl

You can never have enough baskets in your home, in my opinion. They not only add functionality but are excellent for keeping your home organized.

As you are probably already aware, new baskets can be a bit pricey, but I will give you a tip: check out your local thrift stores! You will be surprised at how inexpensive they are and find some great baskets in excellent condition. Of course, as soon as I hit the thrift and antique stores, that is always on my list to check out first. However, I will likely not find it in the thrift store when I am on the hunt shopping for a certain kind of basket. So instead, I will admit that I have purchased some vintage ones on eBay and Etsy.

What should I put in a decorative basket?

Create a centerpiece using faux flower arrangements for your coffee table or sideboard, or create a vignette of candles. And if you have a large basket, consider using it in an entryway for storing umbrellas or a large plant.

Where do you put baskets?

I have baskets everywhere in my home used for many things. Here are a few ideas for using baskets in your home.

Livingroom

Large baskets are greatly used for storing extra afghans/throws and throw pillows.

On the Bookcase

Boardgames are kept in a large basket that sits on top of the bookcase.

Closet or Armoire

Lable the baskets & Store extra toiletry essentials to keep them organized.

Laundry room

A basket on the shelf to store your iron, hand towels, and extra cleaning products.

Pantry

Smaller baskets in the pantry or kitchen cabinets are great for storing packaged foods, such as cereal, side dishes, seasonings &, etc.

Toys

Another excellent storage solution for keeping toys tidied away and organized.

Plant Holder

If you have a plant in a not so lovely container, consider using a basket to place your plant in for a more appealing look.

Table Display

Create a vignette using a woven tray on your coffee table or a side table for collecting knick-knacks, photos, books & so on.

Toilet Paper

Keep a basket in the bathroom to hold extra rolls of toilet paper within arm’s reach.

Wall Display

Create a wall gallery of baskets for a visual appeal.

Under butcher block storage

I have an old basket kept under the butcher block used to store potatoes.

Stack on a hutch for decor

Create a collection of baskets on top of the cabinet for added visual interest.

What else can I use baskets for?

Baskets can be used for anything, whether for organizing, storage, or home decor; they sure look pretty no matter where you have them in your home. Here are some ideas on how to use baskets in your home.

Office supplies, Bath essentials, Extra chargers,

Plants, Toilet paper, Magazines, Crafts

Pantry Organization, Board Games, Firewood,

Afghans/Throws, Pillows, Toys, Books, Movies, Fruit/Veggies, Cleaning supplies, extra chargers, bills, kids homework, garden tools, and so much more!

The possibilities are endless for how to use baskets in your home, whether for home decor or organization.

I have a ton of clutter that we have been clearing and then putting what we want to keep in baskets around the house. Thank you for the information in your post. We could definitely use it!

Love these tips! I actually learned how to make baskets this year from my aunt (a basketweaver and teacher). Now, I’ve been making custom baskets for my pantry and home. Such a fun hobby and so beautiful! Your post makes me want to make a new one. 🙂

We absolutely love baskets for organization and decor! In fact, in our son’s room, that’s about all you see is baskets on shelves – but it beats all the clutter you’d usually see! 😉

I love baskets, I put my clutter in them, but my cats take them over, full or empty, my cats love them too.
