When it comes to finding storage solutions for my old 1885 home, which has very minimal closet space and storage, we have to be creative. Although I have learned to be intentional and purposeful on what we have in our home, I still need to keep our things managed.

The key to staying organized is to have a place for everything, and you will want to make sure the items you need are easily accessible. For example, I use baskets, hooks, chests, an armoire & bins to help keep me and my home organized and are by far the 5 of the best must-have for organization. These items are always at arm’s reach for when I need to put things away. Having proper organizational tools and a place to put them makes it easy for my family to put things away.

As I promised, here are 5 of the best must-have for organization that will help you have well-organized and keep your space tidy!

1. Chest/Trunks

They are my favorite for keeping things organized. We have one in every bedroom, as well as the living room. They are perfect for storing extra blankets & linens.

I have a Hope Chest that my husband bought me when we first got married, and I store my sentimental things, such as my children’s first shoes, first blankets, favorite toys, etc.

Each of my children has a chest in their room to keep their extra bed linens.

The blanket chest in my living room not only holds our extra blankets, but it serves as our coffee table. You can tell we have used it in this capacity for years because it is a well-loved piece of furniture, but that is what adds to its rustic charm, right?

2. Baskets are great for organization

They are your friend! Smaller baskets are perfect for keeping small items contained.
We have several baskets throughout the house, which help make it easy to keep things tidy & at arm’s reach. I also use baskets inside the armoire that holds extra toiletry supplies. Because I listen to music 90% of my day, I also keep my CD collection in a basket.

Large baskets are also great for storing toys, shoes, or even to keep at the bottom of the steps to collect things throughout the day that need to go upstairs. Work smarter, not harder is my motto.

It would help if you always had baskets & bins to keep your food items organized in the kitchen cabinets. They are perfect for storing bags of cereal & snacks, especially those tiny tacos and dressing packets!

3. Metal crates & wood bins

If you know me, you know that I spend a lot of time in my laundry room. With a household of 5 and 3 being female, I am always doing laundry! I need to have things organized & accessible. Everything has to have a place! Metal Crates & Wood Bins are perfect for storing more oversized items.

I can express enough how they are essential to keeping more oversized items organized in your home. We keep a metal crate in our laundry room for extra shoes. Wood bins are great for art supplies, toys &, etc. I also use a wood bin in my TV cabinet that holds our vinyl. The list is endless in how you can use crates & containers because of their versatility. Large Baskets are necessary for keeping your afghans & throw blankets stored. I’m not sure about you, but I have a ton of afghans & throw blankets around our home. If I didn’t have a large basket to store them, you would find them all over my house.

4. Wall Hooks

Have hooks wherever you can. We don’t have a coat closet, so hooks are a necessity in our home. My husband & I made a coat rack that we mounted on the wall in our laundry room & that helps keep our coats, jackets, tote bags & so on at arm’s reach. We also installed hooks in the cellar way for extra coats on off-seasons. We have hooks on just about every door in our house, and you will find many on the walls throughout as well.

5. Wood Boxes with Lids

I have a few little boxes with lids that are perfect for storing items that are used daily. The one I keep on my bookcase supports the small external hard drives I need to have access to quite frequently, and not to mention, it is tucked away from a chance of getting damaged. They are also great for smaller items that are needed daily & at arms reach. It adds that touch of warmth to home decor as well!

Here is a tip:

We did not want to install hooks in the bathroom walls as our walls will tear apart, so we used command hooks to hold our bath towels. Command hooks can be a bit pricey, but they work in a pinch or when you are trying to preserve your old home!

There you have it! 5 tips to help you organize your space! I hope these helpful tips will help and inspire you to get organized.

Keep Smiling 🙂
