An Easy DIY Hack for Cafe Curtains Using Tea Towels

There is something about having light & airy feelings in a room & giving it that natural light that shines through. It is so magical… This DIY hack for No Sew Teal Towel Curtains is so easy & without spending a fortune.

I wanted to get new curtains for my laundry room that would have natural light coming in but also add a bit of softness to the windows. However, I originally had curtains hanging that just felt too heavy for the space & it was lacking the natural light to come through.

We all know how expensive curtains can be, and I did not have the budget to spend much on new curtains.  I looked through a pile of curtains I had saved over the years. They were either the wrong size or not what I had envisioned, and I wanted them to have a linen texture.

I remember purchasing a lot of linen tea towels in bulk because I use them to oil my cast iron. Some were unused, so I had an idea about using them for curtains without purchasing more. Instead of sewing, I could use the ring clips I already had from the last set of curtains I hung.

No Sew Cafe Curtains: A Simple and Budget-Friendly DIY Hack

This was an easy DIY hack that didn’t require a lot of money or sewing. I measured the length from the curtain rod to the bottom of the window trim. Once I had the desired length, I measured the linen tea towel, folded the top part down, and attached the clips to the folded top part of the tea towel.

I was so happy with the result. It was exactly what I envisioned. I love how the natural light filters through and adds softness to the space.

What You’ll Need:

  • Linen tea towels or dish towels (sized according to the width of the window)
  • Small tension rod or curtain rod
  • Curtain clips or Curtain ring clips
  • Hem tape (for adjustments if needed)
  • Tape measure
  • Iron (to press hems for a polished look)
  • Piece of tape (to mark the correct length if needed)

Instructions:

  1. Measure Your Window: Use a tape measure to determine the width of the window and the curtain height you want. Cafe curtains typically cover only the lower half of the window, but you can customize them to your preference.
  2. Prepare Your Tea Towels: If your tea towel fabric is too long, create an extra fold at the top hem and secure it with hem tape. This will help achieve the desired curtain height without sewing.
  3. Attach Curtain Clips: Clip the curtain rings evenly along the top hem of each towel. The number of clips you need depends on the width of your window and how gathered you want your curtains to look.
  4. Install the Rod: Place the tension rod or curtain rod at the desired height within your window frame.
  5. Hang Your Curtains: Slide the curtain clips onto the rod and adjust the panels to ensure they hang evenly.

Helpful Tips:

  • A small tension rod is a great idea for renters since it doesn’t require drilling into walls.
  • Use neutral-colored tea towels to create a timeless look that fits various decor styles.
  • For a pop of color, choose patterned or embroidered towels that complement your kitchen or living room.
  • If you want a more polished look, iron the towels before hanging them to remove creases.
