Choose your canvas or art paper

Decide on the size you want your art piece to be. You can use a traditional canvas or a rustic look with thick art paper or a wooden board.

Layout your Supplies

Layout the paper, feathers, and matte (optional). Place the feathers on the paper, then the matte & arrange the feathers accordingly as you would once they are placed. If you are printing a verse, be sure to leave enough space.

Select Your Verse

Choose a verse that is meaningful to you, whether it’s the word of God or a meaningful quote that speaks to you. There are so many verses you can choose from on Google.

Print the Verse on the Paper

Open MSWord, and select the size of the paper. Choose your font & size of text, then type your quote or verse in the desired area of the layout. This is trial & error, so be patient until you get it right to your liking!

Prepare the feathers

If you’re using real feathers, make sure they’re clean and dry. If you prefer synthetic feathers, you can find them at most craft stores. Arrange the feathers in a pattern you like or randomly for a natural look.

Glue the feather

Once you’re satisfied with the arrangement, use a small amount of glue or adhesive to attach the feathers to the canvas or paper. Be gentle to avoid damaging the delicate feathers.

Add details (optional)

To enhance the art piece further, use acrylic paints to add small details or embellishments around the feathers. Allow the artwork to dry completely before handling or displaying it.

Picture Frame (optional)

How do you keep real feathers from decomposing?

To keep real feathers from decomposing and ensure their longevity, you must take certain precautions to preserve and protect them. Here are some steps you can follow:

  1. Clean the feathers: Before preserving the feathers, ensure they are clean. Gently remove any dirt or debris using a soft brush or by blowing on them gently. Avoid using water or cleaning agents as they may damage the delicate feathers.
  2. Keep them dry: Moisture is one of the leading causes of feather decomposition. Store feathers in a dry environment and avoid high humidity or water exposure. If you plan to display them in a shadow box or frame, ensure the display area is dry and well-ventilated.
  3. Avoid direct sunlight: Prolonged exposure to direct sunlight can cause feathers to fade and become brittle. Keep your feather art piece or collection away from windows or any sources of intense sunlight.
  4. Handle with care: Feathers are delicate, and excessive handling can lead to damage. Try not to touch them too often, and when you do, handle them gently.
  5. Use protective coatings (optional): Some experts recommend using protective coatings, such as clear varnish or spray sealant, to shield the feathers from environmental factors. However, this should be done with caution, as some coatings might alter the appearance of the feathers. Test the coating on a small area before applying it to the entire feather.
  6. Keep away from pests: Insects and pests can be attracted to feathers, leading to damage. Store your feathers in airtight containers or display cases to prevent pests from accessing them.
  7. Control temperature: Extreme temperatures can also impact the preservation of feathers. Avoid exposing them to excessively hot or cold environments.
  8. Regular inspection: Periodically check your feather art or collection for signs of deterioration or pests. If you notice any issues, take appropriate measures to address them.

Remember that even with proper care, natural feathers may eventually show signs of wear and aging over time. Consider using synthetic feathers or high-quality reproductions in your art pieces to ensure long-term preservation.

Should I wash a feather, I found?

If you’ve found a feather and are considering washing it, it’s essential to exercise caution. Washing a feather can be a delicate process, and natural feathers are sensitive to water and cleaning agents, which may cause damage or deterioration. If the feather appears dirty or dusty, gently brush off any debris using a soft brush or blow on it gently to remove loose particles. Avoid using water or cleaning solutions, which may disrupt the feather’s delicate structure. If you plan to use the feather for decoration or Art, it’s best to display it as-is or consider using synthetic feathers for your project. Overall, preserving the natural state of the feather is the safest approach to maintaining its beauty and integrity.

Where can I find feathers that look real?

If you’re searching for real feathers for your DIY wall art project, there are several great places to explore. Hobby Lobby, a renowned craft store, is an excellent starting point. They offer an impressive selection of realistic craft feathers in various colors and sizes. Other craft stores like Michaels, Joann, and A.C. Moore are worth checking out for their diverse feather collections. If you’re a fan of unique finds and affordable treasures, thrift shops might occasionally surprise you with real feathers. Whether from specialty nature stores or farm supply shops, you’re sure to find the perfect feathers to elevate your DIY wall art and bring a touch of nature’s beauty into your home decor.
