Believe me; I understand that cleaning can often seem like a daunting task, especially when it’s been neglected for some time or the last thing you want to do coming home from a long from work and clean. But don’t worry! By implementing these 20 cleaning habits, you can start taking small steps towards maintaining a clean and tidy home today.
Why make cleaning a daily habit?
Making cleaning a daily habit can lead to a cleaner home and make a big difference in maintaining a tidy and organized living space. Daily cleaning routines help prevent the accumulation of dirt, dust, and clutter, making it easier to manage and maintain the overall cleanliness of your home.
By incorporating simple daily habits for cleaning, you can save time and effort in the long run and create a more comfortable and welcoming living environment.
Here are the best tips for 20 Cleaning Habits You Can Start Today!
Start your day with a quick clean-up.
One of the easiest ways to keep your home clean is to start your day with a quick clean-up. Spend 15 extra minutes in the morning tidying up any clutter, wiping down surfaces, and doing a quick sweep or vacuum. This will help to set the tone for the rest of the day and prevent clutter from accumulating.
End your day with a quick clean-up.
Spend a couple of minutes before you turn in for the evening and give a quick scan around the living space to see if anything needs to be tidied up.
Do a load of Laundry every day.
Dirty Laundry can quickly pile up; before you know it, you’re overwhelmed with a mountain of dirty clothes. A simple solution is to do a load of Laundry every day. This will help to keep your laundry basket from overflowing, and you won’t have to spend an entire day doing multiple loads of Laundry.
Make Your Bed Every Morning
The first thing you should do is make your bed every morning! A neatly made bed can make your whole room look more put-together, and it only takes a few minutes. Plus, it can be a great way to start your day on a productive note.
Clean as You Go
Cleaning as you go is a great way to prevent clutter and messes from piling up. Instead of waiting until the end of the day to clean up after yourself, make a habit of tidying up as you go. For example, wash the dirty dishes and put them away as soon as you’re done with them, wipe down counters after cooking, and pick up toys as soon as your kids play with them.
Wipe Down Surfaces Regularly
Dust and grime can quickly accumulate on surfaces in your home, so it’s important to wipe them down regularly. For example, make a habit of wiping down countertops, tables, and other surfaces daily to keep them clean and free of dirt and bacteria.
Sweep or Vacuum Every Day
Sweeping or vacuuming your floors daily is another habit that can help prevent messes from piling up. This is especially important if you have pets or small children, as they can track in dirt and debris from outside. Sweeping or vacuuming each room will help reduce any dirt & dust in your home.
Keep Cleaning Supplies Handy
Having your cleaning products in a convenient location makes it easier to clean up spills and messes as they happen. Keep a small basket with cleaning supplies under the sink or closet to grab what you need quickly.
Clean the Bathroom Once a Week
The bathroom is one of the most frequently used rooms in the house and can quickly become dirty if not cleaned regularly. Try to clean your bathroom once a week, wiping down surfaces, cleaning the toilet, and scrubbing the shower and bathtub.
Organize Your Space
Clutter can make it challenging to keep your home clean and organized. Instead, take time to organize your space, putting things away where they belong and decluttering items you no longer need. This will make cleaning much more manageable and help you maintain a tidy home.
Create a cleaning schedule.
Make a list of tasks that need to be done and schedule them in your calendar or planner. This will help you prioritize your tasks and stay on top of them.
Break tasks into smaller chunks.
Instead of tackling a big cleaning project all at once, break it down into smaller, more manageable tasks. This will make it easier to get started and less overwhelming.
Set a timer
Use a timer to help you stay focused and motivated. For example, set a goal to clean for a certain amount of time and then take a break. This can help to make cleaning feel less like a chore and more like a game.
Reward yourself
Give yourself a small reward for completing a cleaning task. This could be something as simple as a piece of chocolate or a few minutes of your favorite TV show. This will help to motivate you to keep going and make cleaning more enjoyable.
Don’t Procrastinate
Procrastination can be overwhelming for cleaning. Don’t delay tasks, do them as soon as possible. It’s a major obstacle to a tidy home. Don’t tell yourself you’ll clean later. This leads to clutter and dirt.
Implement a Cleaning Schedule
Creating a weekly cleaning schedule can help you stay on track with cleaning tasks and prevent things from slipping through the cracks. This can include daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning tasks, such as vacuuming, dusting, clean floors, and deep cleaning bathrooms. By breaking cleaning tasks down into a schedule, you can make cleaning more manageable and ensure that all areas of your home are consistently clean on a regular basis.
Listen to music or an audiobook.
Listening to music or an audiobook can make cleaning more enjoyable and less boring. It can also help you to stay focused and motivated.
Focus on the benefits.
Remind yourself of the benefits of having a clean home. A clean home is aesthetically pleasing and promotes good health and well-being.
Don’t beat yourself up.
Finally, if you do procrastinate, don’t beat yourself up about it. We all have days when we don’t feel like cleaning. Instead, focus on getting back on track and creating a plan to stay on top of cleaning tasks in the future.
Get Family members to help!
Make a to-do list
This can help make cleaning tasks more manageable by breaking them down into smaller, achievable steps.
Get Family members to help!
Cleaning can often feel like it will never be done, especially when it’s just one person doing all the work. But involving your family in the cleaning process can make a huge difference and become a much more manageable, enjoyable task. Here are some tips on how to get your family members to help with cleaning the entire house:
- Set expectations: Be clear about your expectations when it comes to cleaning. Explain to your family members what needs to be done and when it needs to be done. This will help ensure everyone is on the same page and knows what is expected of them.
- Assign specific tasks: Assign specific cleaning tasks to each family member. This will help to ensure that everyone knows exactly what they are responsible for and can focus on completing their assigned task.
- Make it a team effort: Encourage your family to work together when cleaning. This can make the process more enjoyable and create a sense of an orderly home.
- Create a cleaning schedule: Create a cleaning schedule that includes tasks for each family member. This will help ensure that everyone contributes equally and that cleaning tasks are completed regularly.
- Provide incentives: Provide incentives for your family members to help with cleaning. This could be something as simple as a treat or a fun activity they can enjoy once the cleaning is done.
Involving your family members in the cleaning process can make it a much more manageable and enjoyable task.
By setting expectations, assigning tasks, making it a team effort, providing incentives, and keeping it age-appropriate, you can get everyone involved in maintaining a clean and organized home. Not only will it save you time and effort, but it can also strengthen family bonds and teach valuable life skills to children. So don’t be afraid to delegate and involve your loved ones in the cleaning process – it can lead to a happier and more harmonious household.
- Make it fun: Make cleaning fun by turning up the music, playing games, or having a cleaning competition. This can make cleaning more enjoyable and motivate your family to get involved.
- Lead by example: Set an example for your family members by doing your fair share of the cleaning. When your family members see you taking responsibility for cleaning, they are more likely to follow suit.
- Keep it age-appropriate: Assign tasks that are age-appropriate for your family members. For example, younger children can help with simple tasks like dusting or putting away toys, while older children can help with more complex tasks like vacuuming or laundry.
- Have a family meeting: Hold a family meeting to discuss cleaning expectations and responsibilities. This will help ensure everyone is on the same page and knows what is expected of them.
- Be patient: Finally, be patient with your family members. Cleaning may not be their favorite activity, but with time and encouragement, they may enjoy it more and be more willing to help.
How often should your home be deep cleaned?
The frequency of deep cleaning your whole house depends on various factors, such as the size of your home, the number of occupants, the level of daily activities, and personal preferences. As a general guideline, it is recommended to deep clean your home at least once or twice a year. However, some high-traffic areas, such as kitchens and bathrooms, may require more frequent deep cleaning to maintain hygiene and prevent the buildup of dirt and grime.
My daily cleaning routine
The one thing I try to do daily is 30 minutes of the house daily. If you remember, I have talked about this before in another blog post. Even though I work from home, my home can get messy & unorganized real quick. So, the easy way for me to maintain a clean home is to keep up with my daily routine by sorting through any important papers that need tending to, picking up toys, and putting the kid’s activities & the daily lessons away once they are finished with them. By implementing this on a daily basis, my home will stay clean & organized.
In conclusion
Implementing these daily cleaning habits can avoid procrastination and make cleaning more enjoyable and manageable. Remember, a clean home is a healthy and happy home.

Such good ideas! I totally agree with a couple that I have recently started doing:
* Do a load of laundry every day – with a family of four, we do end up with a lot of laundry, and if I leave it for a few days, it can get a bot overwhelming (especially if I’m doing extra things like washing a couple of curtains, etc).
* Vacuum every day – we just got a stick vacuum cleaner and it has made such a huge difference to how easy it is to keep on top of the vacuuming. I just do a couple of rooms a night, takes maybe 10 minutes, and that way I don’t have to do a full on clean that usually takes an hour!
I need to get my kids on board with doing more jobs – that’s my next goal!
Thanks
