Adding Charm Using Window Box Planters
Adding Charm Using Window box planters is a simple and a great way to dress up the house to give it that beautiful look to any home.
If you are looking for a budget-friendly way to freshen up the outside of your home, then. Adding Charm Using window box planters are it!
We live in a brick townhouse that was built in 1885. It lacks curb appeal, and I have wanted to dress it up! We had already added a new light fixture and a mailbox, but it needed something else. I always loved the look of window box planters. They really do add charm to a home.
What we chose!
We decided to splurge a bit and go with the Traditional Nantucket style, which would look so beautiful on our home. I just imagined how gorgeous Geraniums and the ivy spilling out from the front would look so beautiful on our house. But, I have to say that what I have envisioned for so long is just what I got. It looks so beautiful. I had so many compliments, too, which made my heart happy!
Now I have to admit, the window boxes I have chosen may not be in everyone’s budget, but there are many other options to choose from to stay within your budget.
I had at one point added a huge & yet very heavy basket made out of cement that my cousin gave me that sits in front of our house. I would add flowers, but they never thrived and eventually died, which was disheartening. So I thought an easy way to add beauty and charm to this old house was to add window boxes. Not only did it add curb appeal, but it instantly added beauty & charm!
I also love that you see beautiful flowers when you look out the window. Which also makes it easier to water them too! Haha 🙂
There are so many options for choosing window boxes. For instance, resin material, plastic, wood, wrought iron, and metal. We decided on the resin material because we felt it would hold better in two changes of seasons. But you can choose whatever works for you. Also, you will find that some others will take the window box planters down for the winter but see the brackets mounted.
Added charm to window box planters
To add more charm, we added Nantucket style decorative brackets/corbels to give it that charming feel.
What plants can be added to window boxes?
Personally, I love the look of Geraniums and ivy flowing out the front of the window planters. But whatever you choose, there are so many interns to choose from.
- Fresh Herbs
- Flowers like Geraniums
- Succulents that are low maintenance
- Ivy spilling out the front mixed flowers
How to install the window boxes?
We had our friend Danny install them for us. He is really good at that kind of stuff. You first want to measure the area where the anchors will be installed, then use a drill bit for brick or stone. This step must be done first, or you will have a problem securing the brackets properly. Next, the box adds the Nantucket brackets; they slide on. To be more secure, they were screwed. Finally, attach your Planter box once you have the brackets in place.
Note: Nantucket brackets are entirely optional.
What are the tools needed to install the window boxes?
More than likely, your window boxes will come with directions. This will help you know what is needed to install your window box planters.
- Tools needed
- Drill
- Masonry Bits
- Sleeve Anchors
- Leveler
- Measuring Tape
Do flower window boxes need drainage holes?
Flower boxes do, in fact, need holes on the bottom; otherwise, they can flood in heavy rains. Generally, however, the drainage holes are located toward the front of the box. Hence, the water drains away from the house.
How deep should a window flower box be?
It is recommended to have a minimum of 8 inches in depth and 8 inches from front to back to have enough room for various plants. However, if you have a larger box, especially if you want to include a variety of plants and want them to fill out enough to overflow the box.
What do you line planter boxes with?
You could apply a coat of waterproofing liquid on the insides of the planter box and let it dry for a day. However, it doesn’t hurt to apply another coat if you feel it needs it. Then you can use a plastic liner to line your box; just know that moisture can still seep between the liner and the planter material. However, the waterproofing liquid will ensure that moisture does not harm the planter box.
Should I put rocks in the bottom of the window planters box?
There is no need to put rocks at the bottom of a raised garden bed. It actually will cause more unnecessary weight to the window box. So instead, it’s best to have drainage holes in the window box.
Change your arrangements seasonally.
When changing out seasonally, you want to be sure also use fresh soil to give the new plants & flowers a fresh start.
How to keep plants in window boxes thriving?
Sun-The correct amount of sun is vital to keep your flowers and plants thriving and looking beautiful. Check to see how much sun your flowers and plants need. You may want to rethink what you want to be planted in your window box planters.
Deadhead-Prune your flowers as you see dead flowers or ones that are not showing any life. This will promote new growth.
Watering-Check your containers first. If your soil is dry, give it a good watering, especially on hot summer days, you will need to water more often. It’s best to water in the early mornings and in the evenings. Try not to water when the sun is beaming on your flowers as it could cause burning to the plants. Water directly into the soil.

Looks very nice, would have been nice to see how it looked before hand, unless I missed it. Can you tell me how much the resin boxes were? If not I understand. But from what I see in the pictures, very, very nice. Thank you for sharing.
Thank you 🙂 It was about $400 for the boxes. It was definitely a splurge.
