Once we enter the cooler months, hot chocolate to keep on hand is a must to warm you up. This recipe for Hot Chocolate Mix is so easy to make with a few critical ingredients for a delicious cup.

We make homemade hot cocoa quite a bit during the cold months, but when I was growing up, we always had the canister or packets of hot chocolate mix. However, I soon learned that you could easily make your own homemade hot chocolate mix, and I was hooked!

Hot chocolate topped with marshmallows was always my children’s favorite treat after playing in the snow or just to have while watching a movie.

You only need four ingredients to make this tasty treat.

1/2 c Unsweetened Cocoa

1 c Non-dairy Creamer

3/4 c Sugar

1 c Non-fat dry milk

Pinch of Kosher Salt (optional)

Making homemade hot chocolate mix literally takes less than five minutes.

In a large bowl, combine all ingredients & mix well.

Here’s a tip: Have a large Mason Jar or a canister on hand? Add all ingredients into a jar, add the lid and shake well. You now have your jar of homemade hot chocolate.

How to make a cup of hot chocolate?

Add 3 tablespoons of mix into mug, then add boiling water. For a creamier taste, use hot milk. Then, add your favorite topping, such as marshmallows, whip cream, or whatever your heart desires. Mix well & Enjoy!

What is the best way to store the mix?

Store in an airtight container. Mason jars or a glass canister with a attached lid are a great option.

What is the shelf life of the hot chocolate mix?

It can be stored for up to one year as long as you have it in an airtight container.

Toppings to add for your hot chocolate

Marshmallows

my children’s favorite! We use mini marshmallows, but you use camp for marshmallows instead.

Cinnamon

Sprinkle some cinnamon or use a cinnamon stick to give a delightful flavor to your cup.

Whip Cream

This is my absolute favorite to add to hot chocolate. Whether it is store-bought or homemade whip cream, it gives it that delicious creamy flavor.

Vanilla Extract

Add a 1/2 teaspoon to your cup for a tasty treat.

Candy Cane

Break up the candy cane & Sprinkle on your hot chocolate for a yummy candy treat or use the candy cane for stirring.

Chocolate Flakes

Why not add some chocolate flakes for a chocolaty treat if you added whip cream.

How to make Low-Calorie Mix

Omit sugar; add 15 packets of low-calorie sweeteners such as Equal.

Note: Non-dairy Creamer is a whitener & should not be used as a milk replacement.
