This simple hack to keep your berries fresh for weeks and mold-free for weeks. When buying berries from the grocery store, take them out of the plastic containers & store them in a mason jar.

You are not canning them… You’re just storing them in a glass jar instead of a plastic container. This simple hack to keep your berries fresh for weeks is even better!. Believe it or not, food keeps longer in a glass.

Blueberries in a one quart mason jar & strawberries in a two quart mason jar on the butcher block with berries & a tea towel on the butcher block next to the filled jars of berries, in front of a vintage sick.

I don’t know about you, but I am lucky to get a week with berries stored n the plastic containers from the stores.

This is another reason why I love mason jars. We don’t just use them for canning but as well as for food storage as well. For example, you got leftovers from dinner? Store your leftovers, such as vegetables, pasta, rice, sauces & so much more, in a glass mason jar. Not to mention, mason jars have better seals!

I have an obsession with mason jars, especially vintage ones. They are a must-have in my kitchen.

You can find a case of large mason jars online or at your local store relatively inexpensively.

Here are SIX tips for storing your berries in a mason jar.

  1. If your berries have a stem, do not remove it.
  2. Do not wash the berries before storing them.
  3. Make sure you use a clean glass jar that’s been washed and dried thoroughly.
  4. Before placing your berries in the jar, discard any that are spoiled or bruised.
  5. The jar should be placed in the coldest part of your refrigerator.
  6. The berries will not get moldy using this method.

If you want your berries to last longer, store them in the freezer. It’s best not to wash your berries. Instead, place them on parchment/wax paper & put them in the freezer for a couple of hours. Once you take them out, then place them in a Ziploc storage bag for long-term storage. When ready to use, wash & enjoy! They are great in smoothies!

Do mason jars keep food fresh longer?

Storing food in mason jars will stay fresh longer in the fridge. Not only do they clean up easily, but their tight lids keep smells in and air out, which is helping prolong the freshness of the foods you store in the mason jars.

Until next time,
